Don’t Tell It Like It Is

I have always seen one of the biggest challenges facing our industry is the need to make what we do, and how we do it, easy to understand and interesting.

While that sounds like a glib statement, it is not. More often than not, most people will tell you that they don’t engage more with their financial future because finance is boring. They only really look to take charge when they have to.

Now I don’t blame this lack of interest entirely on poor communication skills. There are many reasons why people choose to delay planning for their financial future.

But it sure would make it easier if we, as an industry brought our audience to us. If we could learn  from great storytellers and content creators how to tell our story in such a compelling way that people were drawn to us, despite believing they had plenty of time to plan for their future, it would be a win for everyone involved.

With the launch of this series we have taken great delight in the penny dropping moments that both our investors and their advisers had in getting access to the money managers themselves. The Guardians were extremely skilled in asking the right questions – and the magic of TV allowed our managers to say everything they needed to in a compelling, concise and understandable way.

Those fund managers who succeed in the new frontier of direct investors, and those advisers that move their role into one of guiding along the life journey, will be successful if they crack that challenge of communication that creates engagement.

I have learned over many years that it is not the smartest person in the room that usually delivers engagement. It is usually the person that is most skilled at presenting, communicating, or making concepts easily understandable and exciting.

We believe we play a crucial role in taking incredibly smart people and turning their smarts into easy to understand messaging. The Investment Series is just one of the ways we intend on continuing to do that.
