If you work in the institutional investment space, chances are you know Jenny Josling. She has been a leader in the sector for well over 20 years and is known for her integrity, work ethic and intelligence.

In the retail industry, Jenny is a relative newcomer. She is the managing director of Orbis Investments (Australia), a global investment firm that is only now moving into the retail market in Australia.

Now I do have the advantage of having known Jenny for more than 15 years. And last year I travelled extensively with her making leading edge content from Orbis analysts around the globe. I have to say, this woman is impressive. I have always considered myself a hard worker, but Jenny takes that to a whole new level. She is, quite frankly, a machine. And she has this way about her where she always feels she could be doing more. I think this may come from her country-girl upbringing in Griffith, where she learned how to be tough, and her incredibly high standards: a reflection of the firm she works for with an overlay of personal drive.

As a leader, she is inclusive, and generous. She always makes sure that everyone is heard, and their opinions considered; but in the end she makes her own mind up. Her executive team is incredibly loyal to her, which is a reflection of the long-term tenure of her team. She is supportive of women in the workplace and the issues they face having children and coming back to work, but is equally involved in making sure dads get enough time to witness their children’s lives. She has her priorities right and her business thrives because of it.

She is also a concert-level jazz pianist, and an award-winning horse woman. In fact she seems to be annoyingly great at most things she turns her hands to. She assures me however, it’s only because she works hard at it, that it’s not natural talent. She is incredibly unassuming.

When watching the interview with Jenny, take note of how she talks passionately about the end investor. She really does believe in what she is doing. She drove her firm to bring in a zero base fee that rewards performance, because she wants to show true value for money. It was a major rethink in the way investment management firms operate, and a reflection of the values of both Jenny and the firm.

I know you will enjoy getting to know Jenny, she is someone who is easy to respect and admire, and almost impossible not to like.
