Are retail and industry funds diametrically opposed?

When Vanessa first approached me with the idea of creating the next NMP After Hours series around industry fund CEOs, I had to step back for a minute and reflect.

OneVue has historically operated primarily in the retail superannuation sector, in superannuation administration and as a retail platform. I thought what would I be saying by shining a light on industry funds?

That brief moment was a stark reminder of how easy it is to miss the big picture, fall into outdated ways of thinking or patterns of behaviour and the importance of taking stock of where we are right now.

The industry fund sector is continuing to evolve, OneVue itself has undergone enormous change and no one can argue that this year, the financial services sector has experienced unprecedented change as we continue to come to terms with the implications of FASEA and the Royal Commission.

Today through partnerships with organisations like Mercer and Aon, OneVue is increasingly supporting the industry fund sector and its members, particularly with direct to market services but most importantly it has become crystal clear that we are all connected. Through custodians, fund managers, partnerships or members themselves.

What we all have in common are members. As Thomas J Watson once wrote, the toughest thing about the power of trust is that it is very difficult to build and very easy to destroy. The essence of trust building is to emphasise the similarities.

What we have in common is the need to put our members first. To provide genuine choice and education to those that choose to entrust their super to us. That way we are all winners.

Of course what has made me equally proud is to see these incredibly talented CEOs step forward and share their stories with us. They also all happen to be women leaders.

As is Jenny Josling, the managing director of Orbis Australia, who joins Vanessa as co-host of this important series. Wonderful to see such an amazing person share not only what she knows about investment management in Australia but her knowledge on investment trends globally.

So thank you Vanessa. It was a great idea. I hope you all enjoy listening to this series of After Hours. I know I did and on reflection wish I would have thought of it myself!
