As I walked past the very long queue at the newsagent, I had to wonder what was going on - people were piled out of the store and down the street.
I looked up to the window and saw that the lottery had reached $100 million that week. I watched with interest the faces of people battened down against the wind, waiting in line outside the store for, let’s face it, their little piece of hope.
I realised how revealing people’s dreams of winning the lottery were. If you ask most people what they would do if they won the big one, they would have a pretty quick answer. Most of us at some point have daydreamed about what life would be like with our money situation taken care of.
But could these dreams reveal more than you think?
Tell your clients to listen to their hearts when having these dreams (and give it a go yourself!) - because dreams are good indicators of the life you really want. And people don’t need to win the lotto to get it.
Sure, you may not get the mansion and butler in a life without a lottery win, but most of our dreams revolve around a few key themes. Thinking about themes that are in your dream set can help to make concrete plans on how you could achieve a version of that.
Three key themes include:
Giving money to our kids or family. Most people dream of buying their children a house, or setting up their parents in old age. Whatever the dream, the desire is all about legacy. Giving someone else a helping hand.
Doing what you want, when you want, and not for money. This is a big one and important to think about - is it just your job you want to change, or is it the hours you work? What is it about this freedom that is so different than what you have now? How could you move towards that feeling of freedom in your work, rather than slavery to your work?
Most of us want to see the world if we win the lottery. So how can we see more now? Can you plan ahead and save for holidays and make it part of your life experience?
What the lottery really represents to people is financial security. A security worth lining up for and paying money to “be in it to win it.” While most people know they have no chance of winning, this small hope of having the life of their dreams keeps them in that newsagent line.
For me, I would rather design the life I can make happen - with a solid plan and mindset to get there. Sure, it’s not the easy way, but my 24 years in financial services have taught me there’s no such thing as easy money.
Until next time,
