Why I’m so excited about our new series

I’ve been running a media business in finance for a very long time – 20 years, in fact. And this is not my first show. But I’m particularly excited about it for one very good reason. This season in our program, Secrets of the Money Masters, we take five different athletes on a journey to reach their financial goals.

What’s this got to do with advisers, you may ask? Lots. Because we all know Australians love sports. Athletes are usually amongst the most revered people in our society. But the interesting thing about this is, when it comes to money, athletes are not that different from the average person when it comes to financial literacy. They don’t have all the answers, and they need good advice to make the right financial decisions.

For some reason, many people assume that those who are champions on the sporting field are also winners with money. In reality, this is rarely the case. You only have to watch the HBO series Ballers to see that on a grand scale – professional footballers blowing money like water and ending up with nothing.

Our athletes in Australia, of course, are a little different. They don’t earn as much as US sports stars, but they also don’t tend it blow it on wild purchases. They do, however, need financial advice and knowledge around investing to make their money work for them.

By watching this series, people will learn how to identify their most important goals for the short, medium and and long term, and make an assessment on what may be holding them back with money – in fact, it begins with a diagnosis made via the free quiz on my website here. Viewers will also see what a high quality financial planner can do for them – how they can be a money coach, and help them make the right plan to set them up for the future they want.

While the thrust of the series is seeing these sports stars get their finances in order, our belief is that by showing them being vulnerable about their financial situation, viewers will also see it’s possible to benefit greatly through planning and investing.

Secrets of the Money Masters will premiere on Channel 9 on June 29th at 12pm.
