THE EIGHT SECRETS OF SUCCESSFUL LEADERS

Sometimes we look at those who have made it as something different from the rest of us – smarter, more unique and somehow untouchable. However I have learnt from meeting some amazing people while making our TV programs that most successful people share some common traits – no matter what walk of life they are coming from.

Over time I have come to believe there are eight defining traits or characteristics that set these success stories apart.

1. They value time. They put the time into their pursuit almost at the exclusion of everything else. Does this mean they have balance? It depends on what you call work-life balance. Because work tends to be the life of most successful people. They just figure out a way to successfully integrate the people they care about into the scenario as well.

2. They are intellectually curious. They ask lots of questions and are always keen to learn. So many people fight to be heard that they don’t ask questions any more. Those who are curious are usually innovative and successful at what they do.

3. They solve problems creatively. Usually if it has been done before, this is not the answer these people go to. Rather, they apply existing knowledge to new problems and create a new way to get around it.

4. They are self-reliant. These people know that the buck stops with them, and they can’t rely on anyone else for their success. This does not mean they don’t have colleagues or friends that they collaborate with, rather they don’t use those people for success or blame others for what’s happening around them – they own their journey and move forward of their own accord.

5. They never give up. This one is huge. Sometimes the only difference between successful people and everyone else is the fact that they never stopped moving forward, no matter what the setback. They are endlessly tenacious.

6. They are connected. Not because they are networkers, but rather because they attract people constantly into their orbit. And they invest generously in these relationships because they actually care, which means people trust them and the benefits flow in both directions.

7. They have unique perspective. Some call it wisdom, but I think it is a way of looking at the world with different eyes – and not following the mass view. This might make them unpopular at times but it also means they can see opportunity where others see problems.

8. They take action. Constantly. On several fronts, at once. Grit, determination and momentum mean these people are always on the move. And this action is contagious and usually inspires people around them.

If you are reading this I have no doubt you have more than one or two of these traits already in the bag. The other trait I have found that universally identifies successful people is their willingness to put themselves in situations that are uncomfortable in order to achieve growth.
