There’s no doubt when you meet Pina Sciarrone that she’s got energy: the way she moves, talks and gets things done are a testament to a high energy individual.

She is also a lot of fun. While doing a very serious job, as the chief retail officer for AIA Australia, she always makes sure she has a laugh and finds the humour in every situation – which is not always an easy thing to do in an executive position.

Her passion for advisers and insurance is very real. She lives and breathes this stuff, and truly believes the work that AIA is doing is life changing. She also wants more people to feel the benefit of that. AIA’s goal as a business is for Australia to be the most protected nation in the world and Pina believes they will get there.

When she tells me that last year, AIA paid out more than 10,000 claims to people who really needed their help, there is both pride and a determination in her. Insurance is one of those game changers that people only ever truly understand when they, or someone they love, needs it.

Pina is a devoted mum, and the daughter of Italian parents. In our interview she talks at length about having European parents growing up in Melbourne, and how she had to break through stereotypes and expectations to grow her career and have a family.

She is disarmingly honest, and you can’t help but get swept up in in her energy and drive. I know Mark enjoyed our conversation, and was intrigued by her non-traditional path to get to the top in financial services. This is a woman who loves maths, actuarial studies, and numbers. The fact that she is a people person to boot makes her a real triple threat.

I’m sure you will enjoy getting to know Pina better: our industry is lucky to have her, and I know her contribution is far from over. This is a person who has the energy, smarts and know-how to truly make a difference.
