In our recent filming session for Judgement Day – the conclusion to Series 4 of No More Practice, I was reminded just how emotional it can be running a business. Not just for practice owners, but for everyone in our industry charged with delivering quality advice solutions to consumers. There is a lot at stake.
We will be releasing a preview of our Judgement Day episodes at our live event on August 23rd. As you will see, emotions run high on every side of the fence. Seller Jim Taggart faces the reality of walking away from 30 years of running a practice, while Sam Henderson faces some hard truths about what it will take to continue the growth trajectory of his business, and how that will affect time with his young family.
Mentor Barry Lambert also got emotional in lobbying our judges to consider Sam’s new strategy, which will all be revealed on Judgement Day – because Barry was convinced that in small business, you need to evolve continually to survive.
Even our judges gave some emotional commentary around the human side of running big business and what it takes to create value in this competitive market at an institutional level, as well as at practice level.
What Judgement Day reminded me was that there is more than the rational side to business – and that every decision we make in business has an element of emotion attached. To deny this is to miss out on a great opportunity to connect on a more human level – making professional and financial success that much more rewarding.
As the AFA prepare to launch their Inspire Initiative for Women in Financial Planning, it is obvious that women in our industry bring an emotional intelligence to the way they run their practices, which can lead to great success. But I have to say, I see no less passion and emotion coming from their male counterparts. It’s clear these are key ingredients for any successful business leader.
